History 1, 2, 3

Our first homeschool years were spent with Ambleside Online.  However, it soon became too unwieldy for us to use with four children close in age.  Over the years I tweaked and simplified, added and subtracted, until I came up with the schedule we use today.

History 1-2-3

These selections are intended to be read aloud by a parent in years 1 and 2, weaning to reading independently by the end of year 3.   Do not feel compelled to read every book!  Some years (and some children) will fly through them; some will need to sit and stew.  This schedule is one example of how the readings could be spread over a 36 week school year.

After each day’s reading, have the child tell back to you (narrate) what he remembers. Record memorable events in a Book of Centuries.

History 1, 2, and 3 are interchangeable.  If you have multiple children aged 5-9, they can all be in the same year of History.   At age 9+ (when reading independently) each child can move into History 4.  The companion books sometimes align with the core readings, sometimes not. Feel free to use them in any order.   The point is not to line everything up, but to give the child a variety of interesting things to read.

Timelines are provided below for printing.  Use them as a parent reference to pull in other resources you may have for the time period being studied.  The Book of Centuries is for the child to use.

Timeline 1;   Book of Centuries 1* (Prehistory – 0 A.D.)

Timeline 2;   Book of Centuries 2* (50 A.D. – 1200 A.D.)

Timeline 3;   Book of Centuries 3* (1210 A.D. – 1600 A.D.)

Clip Art that can be pasted in the Book of Centuries.

*Instructions for Book of Centuries: Print each page on heavy-duty cardstock. Line up end to end and secure with clear packing tape.  Flip over and tape seams on back as well.  Fold accordion style for storage.
